Botanical Name: A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Weigela Deciduous shrub Full sun to part shade Deciduous shrubs from East Asia grown for their showy displays of trumpet-shaped flowers. Some cultivars also have colorful foliage. Bloom is heavy in late May and early June, often with repeat bloom on the current season’s growth. Plants have an upright, spreading habit, thanks to shoots that grow straight up, then, as they mature, arch down to the ground. Weigelas thrive in full sun or partial shade and almost any well-drained soil and are rarely bothered by pests or diseases. They are good candidates for the shrub border and are at home in natural gardens. Zone 5, except as noted.
W. ‘Red Prince’. A very hardy hybrid from Iowa State University with strong, pinkish red flowers that hold their color well. Good recurrent bloom in late summer. Height: 5–6ft. Zone 4.
W. ‘Variegata Nana’. A compact variegated Weigela with mid-green leaves that are edged with cream. It bears lots of rose-pink flowers in late May. A bright accent for a shrub border. Height: 3–4ft.
NEW W. ‘White Knight’. PP # 8348. Pale pink buds open to pure white flowers that, unlike those of most other Weigelas, have a light sweet scent. This cultivar reliably produces a second, smaller show in late summer. An Iowa State University introduction. 4–5ft x 5–6ft. Zone 3.
