Elm Ulmus parvifolia ‘hokkaido’ Deciduous shrub Full sun Chinese or Lacebark Elm If you’re picturing a large shade tree, we have a surprise for you. ‘Hokkaido’ is a very dwarf cultivar with a globe-shaped habit that bears tiny (1/8in), dark green leaves on stiff, gnarled branches. A 10-year-old plant is only about 18in tall, with a 2in diameter trunk that has handsome, corky bark. At 30 years, the same plant might be 3ft tall, with a 6in trunk. ‘Hokkaido’ is a perfect rock garden plant and a natural bonsai that requires occasional pruning but no wiring to maintain its shape. It needs full sun and evenly moist but well-drained soil. Like the species, it shows good resistance to Dutch Elm disease and the Elm leaf beetle. Height: 18in. Zone 6.
