Osmanthus

Osmanthus                                                               Evergreen shrub            Full sun to part shade

A small genus of Holly look-alikes grown for their leathery, evergreen, and often spiny leaves and fragrant flowers. Only O. heterophyllus, a native of Japan, is hardy for us. It’s worth growing for its glossy evergreen foliage alone, but it also has incredibly fragrant white flowers, which appear in the leaf axils in fall. They are small and mostly obscured by the leaves, but your nose will never miss them. We offer two compact cultivars with interesting foliage characteristics. They thrive in sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained, acid soil. Both make handsome border plants and stand up well to shearing. They are also remarkably deer resistant, even in the worst of winters. Reliably hardy through Zone 7 and in protected areas of Zone 6.

O. heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’. This selection has spiny, Holly-like foliage that bears striking color patterns. The showy new growth is red to orange or gold and slowly turns to a cream that is heavily flecked with green. A bright accent for the shrub border. 4ft x 5ft.

O. h. ‘Rotundifolius’. The deep, nearly black-green leaves of this cultivar are spine free. Instead, the margins are rounded in a rough sort of way, as though cut out by a kindergartener who hasn’t yet learned to cut a smooth curve. Makes a thick, rounded shrub. An excellent foundation or hedge plant. 4ft x 5ft.
