Jasmine Jasminum nudiflorum Evergreen ground cover/Vine Full sun to part shade Winter Jasmine When you think of Jasmines, you think of tender plants with intensely fragrant flowers. The Winter Jasmine is different. It is perfectly hardy here and even into Zone 6. Its cheerful, starlike yellow flowers have no fragrance, alas, but they make up for that by appearing very early—in midwinter, long before the small, deep green leaves emerge—and continuing to open over many weeks. The Winter Jasmine can be grown as a sprawling ground cover 12–18in high and 3–4ft wide, or, with some work, it can be trained to a height of 10ft or more on a wall or trellis. As a ground cover shrub, it is useful for covering banks or softening walls or simply for scrambling around at the feet of evergreens, which provide an excellent foil for the winter blooms. Plants flower best in full sun but tolerate partial shade, and they thrive in any well-drained soil. Zone 6 (with protection).
Juniperus Conifer Full sun Juniper A familiar group of tough and durable evergreens that need sun and well-drained soil and are perfectly happy on a hot, dry, sandy bank where few other plants have a prayer. We offer a strong selection of cultivars that includes the indispensable “rug” Junipers, compact mounding types, and medium-size plants for foundation or border use. The growth rates provided (miniature, dwarf, intermediate, large) are those defined by the American Conifer Society.
J. chinensis ‘Kaizuka Variegated’. Intermediate. Very dense green foliage splashed with creamy white. Habit is upright but irregular—not too stiff or formal. Use as a bright accent in a shrub or conifer border or along a foundation. Grows to a height of about 6ft. Zone 4.
J. communis ‘Berkshire’. Miniature. This tiny, slow-growing mound has striking silvery-gray foliage that turns plum in winter. A good choice for the rock garden. Also an excellent companion for Heaths and Heathers of all kinds. Grows to a height of just 1ft. Zone 4.
J. c. ‘Compressa’. Miniature to dwarf. This attractive dwarf forms a slender column of gray-green foliage. Excellent for rock gardens and troughs. Height: just 24–30in. Zone 5 (with protection).
J. c. ‘Gold Cone’. Dwarf. The name is just right. The lime green foliage is flushed with bright yellow, and the habit is columnar. Makes a stunning focal point in a conifer border or rock garden. 3–4ft x 18in. Zone 5.
J. conferta ‘Emerald Sea’. Dwarf. Lovely blue-green foliage and silvery blue fruits grace a low spreading ground cover. A beautiful and reliable selection that is very tolerant of salt spray; it can be used to reduce erosion on sand dunes. 1ft x 6–8ft. Zone 5.
J. c. ‘Silver Mist’. (‘Shiro Toshio’.) Dwarf. One of the best Junipers for ground cover use; yet it remains a well-kept secret. Foliage is an attractive slate gray with a silvery white flush and has a thick, heavy texture. Habit is low and spreading and very neat—it looks as though a phantom gardener gives it a daily manicure with bonsai scissors. 1ft x 3ft. Zone 5.
J. horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’. Intermediate. This is probably the most popular of the blue “rug” Junipers, and rightly so. It forms a carpet of silvery gray blue foliage. An excellent ground cover. Height: 4–6in x 6ft. Zone 3.
J. procumbens ‘Nana’. Dwarf. A low spreader with short blue-green needles that turn grayish green in winter. Forms a dense mat composed of short sprays of foliage. Reliable and useful for bonsai, coating rock walls, and massing as a ground cover. 6in x 30in. Zone 4.
J. squamata ‘Blue Star’. Dwarf. Bright blue foliage and a compact habit have made this cultivar very popular. The color is what might be called silver blue, and in the warm light of morning and evening, it verges on turquoise.
