Calluna (Heather) Cultivars

CALLUNA CULTURE
Heathers are exacting in their cultural requirements. They require an acid soil that is moisture retentive but very well drained. A sandy loam with plenty of added peat is ideal. Lighten heavy clay soils by working in generous amounts of sand; acidify limey soils by digging in plenty of peat. In all soils, the addition of gypsum is beneficial. For best flowering and foliage color, Heathers should be planted in an open, sunny position. Because they are vulnerable to desiccation from winter winds and the low angle of the winter sun, northern and western exposures should be avoided. Southern or eastern exposures are best. Mulching around Heathers is also important because it preserves
moisture, keeps the soil cool, and prevents frost heaving in winter. Since Heathers do not shed their old foliage and they bloom on new growth, they need to be pruned annually. Cut a few inches below the old flower spikes (until you see green). This annual pruning keeps the plants evenly shaped and encourages them to flower profusely. Pruning can be done at any time, but the best time is in early March, before new growth starts.

Erica (Heath) Cultivars

ERICA CULTURE
Culture for Heaths is the same as for Heathers (see p63): full sun and evenly moist but well-drained, acid soil. Heaths, however, are a bit more tolerant than Heathers, performing well in light shade and in heavier soils with a higher pH. Like other evergreens, Heaths are susceptible to winter “burn,” which can be prevented by planting them in protected locations. They do not require an annual pruning as Heathers do but may be shaped as needed. Pruning should be done just after plants finish flowering.
